Opposition MP calls for intl mediation in talks with Azerbaijan

PanARMENIAN.Net - Hayk Mamijanyan, head of the I Have Honor parliamentary faction, underscored the importance of involving an international mediator in the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He argued that the current format is failing to produce meaningful outcomes, Armenpress reports.

“Perhaps it’s time to try a different route—engage an international mediator, appoint a guarantor for the negotiation process, and change the logic of talks,” Mamijanyan stated.

According to him, both the current conflict and numerous historical conflicts globally have never been resolved without the involvement of a reliable mediator.

“There’s no such case in history,” the opposition leader added.

Mamijanyan clarified that he is not setting geopolitical preconditions for mediation. Instead, the goal is to identify an actor meeting two essential criteria.

“We need a country or international organization that fulfills two minimum requirements: first, it must be capable of engaging in the process and have the authority to gain acceptance from both sides for its mediation.

Second, it must have some degree of influence and presence in the region, so that its words carry weight beyond just making statements. With the exception of Turkey, any party or organization meeting these two basic conditions could yield better results than the current bilateral talks,” he stressed.

Recently, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been conducting negotiations bilaterally, without the involvement of a mediator.
