Iranian President: South Caucasus must remain free of foreign interference

PanARMENIAN.Net - During a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran supports a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia aimed at strengthening stability and peace in the region.

He also emphasized that Tehran is opposed to any foreign interference in the affairs of the South Caucasus, stressing that Iran's commitment to regional cooperation with its neighbors is built on this very principle, Minval.az reported.

On trade ties, Pezeshkian said: “To increase trade between Iran and Turkey, it is necessary to simplify banking and customs cooperation. Iran is ready to help accelerate the improvement of bilateral relations and remove any barriers hindering mutual cooperation.”

On August 8, a trilateral meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was held at the White House, resulting in a joint declaration.

At that event, Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of their leaders and U.S. officials, preliminarily signed a draft agreement titled “On the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
