Yerevan, Tbilisi formalize migrant return procedures

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian government has approved the ratification process for a readmission agreement between Armenia and Georgia concerning the return of individuals residing without authorization in each country’s territory.

The decision was made during the November 14 Cabinet session and was listed among non-reportable agenda items.

According to the government’s justification, the legal agreement is intended to combat illegal migration and is seen as an effective international mechanism in this area—especially important given the shared border between the two countries.

The agreement outlines a coordinated approach to identifying, verifying, and returning individuals residing illegally, including nationals of both countries, third-country nationals, and stateless persons.

It establishes the legal basis for organizing the entire readmission process, including lists of acceptable proof of nationality, documentation supporting the return of third-country nationals and stateless persons, procedures for interviews and escorting, as well as deadlines and formats for requests and other technical elements.

The initiative also aims to strengthen effective migration cooperation between Armenia and Georgia.

The agreement was signed in Tbilisi on July 21, 2025.
