Pashinyan: ruling party went through ‘hell’ to achieve peace

PanARMENIAN.Net - Speaking at a panel organized by the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared that his Civil Contract party had gone “through hell” to reach a peace agreement, Pastinfo reports.

He stressed the significance of the upcoming parliamentary elections, calling them a historic opportunity for Armenia and its neighbors to enter a new era.

“We now have an unprecedented opportunity to establish lasting peace. This is essential to safeguarding the sovereignty, independence, and statehood of countries in our region,” Pashinyan said.

He explained that a key reason peace is now possible, unlike in previous years, lies in the mutual understanding of shared interests among regional countries.

“Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia all became independent in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. That created a completely new situation. From a domestic political standpoint, peace is a major achievement,” he added.

Referring to the 2018 revolution led by his party, Pashinyan said: “Together with Civil Contract, we carried out a non-violent, velvet, popular revolution. I am proud we managed to survive these difficult times; we truly went through hell to get here.”

On August 8, a trilateral meeting took place at the White House between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. It resulted in a joint declaration. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also initialed a peace agreement in the presence of the three leaders.
