Yerevan expects UN support for regional peace efforts![]() December 18, 2025 - 18:09 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia expects the 10th Secretary-General of the United Nations to offer continuous and consistent support for peace efforts in the South Caucasus region. This was stated by Deputy Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN, Zhirayr Ananyan, during an open debate titled “Leadership for Peace,” held under Slovenia’s presidency on December 15, 2025. According to Armenia’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Ananyan’s remarks highlighted the essential role of the UN in upholding both global and regional security. He emphasized that such efforts must be grounded in international legal principles and the core objectives of the UN Charter, especially the principles of territorial integrity and sovereign equality of states. Ananyan further noted that unresolved past challenges, current threats, and future uncertainties underscore the urgent need for fully functioning multilateral diplomacy, with the UN playing a central role. “In today’s climate of dangerous polarization and geopolitical turbulence, the UN’s role is more crucial than ever in leading efforts to prevent conflicts, strengthen the global peace and security architecture, and promote sustainable development, human rights, and dignity,” Ananyan stated. On August 8, a trilateral meeting took place at the White House involving Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. A joint declaration was signed following the meeting in Washington. In the presence of the leaders, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov preliminarily signed an agreement on the establishment of peace and interstate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took to social media to thank his Lithuanian counterpart for the contribution.
