Armenian athletes begin competition at Winter Olympics

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia's representatives have begun their participation in the 25th Winter Olympic Games taking place in Italy.

Olympic team member Katya Galstyan, competing in the women’s 20 km skiathlon (classic/freestyle), was unable to finish after completing the first 10 km in classic style. The Olympic champion in the event was Sweden’s Frida Karlsson with a time of 53 minutes and 45 seconds.

This marks Galstyan’s fourth Winter Olympics appearance. She is set to compete again on February 12 in the 10 km interval start (freestyle) event.

In the men's 20 km skiathlon, Armenian skier Mikayel Mikayelyan placed 48th out of 73 participants, finishing with a time of 51 minutes and 6 seconds. Norway’s Johannes Klæbo won the event with a time of 46 minutes and 11 seconds.

Mikayelyan will also compete in the men’s 10 km interval start (freestyle) on February 13.

Alpine skier Harutyun Harutyunyan is scheduled to compete in the giant slalom on February 14 and the slalom on February 16.

The figure skating pair Karina Akopova and Nikita Rakhmanin will perform in the short program qualification round on February 15, followed by the free program qualification on February 16.

The 25th Winter Olympic Games feature 116 medal events across 16 different sports.
