Belgium to open consular service in Yerevan

PanARMENIAN.Net - Belgium will soon open a consular service at its embassy in Yerevan. Member of the Chamber of Representatives Michel De Maegd described the upcoming launch as excellent news, Armenpress reported.

The initiative stems from a resolution adopted by the Chamber of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Belgium, which proposed strengthening Belgium’s presence in Armenia, taking into account the growing importance of ties between people and the two societies.

“This is a struggle I have led in recent months, after securing the opening of the embassy. This issue was a priority for Armenians, because they see that Belgium is demonstrating long-term engagement. It is also important for the Armenian diaspora living in Belgium, which is deeply connected to its homeland.

This presence strengthens human, family, economic and cultural ties between the two countries. And, of course, it is important for our citizens in Armenia, who will have effective support — accessible representation from a state that will not leave them alone in difficult times.

It is also important from the perspective of our bilateral relations. Armenia is at a pivotal stage in its history amid profound regional changes. It has chosen a path of closer alignment with Europe. Belgium must be ready for this process politically, economically, and humanely,” Michel De Maegd said.

He added that sustainable peace in the South Caucasus is not dictated from afar, but built through presence, dialogue and commitment.

According to him, having a presence on the ground means better understanding the situation, acting more accurately and providing effective support. The Belgian politician also thanked Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot for his attention and proactive approach.

Armenia’s Ambassador to Belgium, Tigran Balayan, said the decision marks an important achievement, reached through consistent work with all political forces represented in the Belgian parliament.

“The importance of opening a consular section at the Belgian Embassy in Armenia was enshrined in a resolution unanimously adopted by the Belgian parliament last year. This important step also has particular significance in the context of the visa liberalization process. Until its completion, Armenian citizens will be able to apply for visas for Belgium and possibly other Benelux countries through the Belgian Embassy. We express our gratitude to members of the Belgian parliament, Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot and colleagues at the Foreign Ministry for this important decision,” he said.

The decision has been described as a significant signal for deepening Belgium–Armenia relations.
