Baku summons Iran envoy after Nakhichevan drone strike

PanARMENIAN.Net - Iran’s ambassador to Baku, Mojtaba Demirchilu, has been summoned to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry following a drone strike on Nakhichevan.

“The Iranian side has been strongly protested, and a corresponding note of protest will be handed over,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement, APA reported.

According to the ministry, drones launched from Iranian territory struck the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan during the daytime hours of March 5.

One of the drones fell onto the terminal building of Nakhichevan airport, while another landed near a school building in the village of Shekerabad.

“We strongly condemn these drone attacks carried out from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which damaged the airport building and injured two civilians,” the statement said.

It added that the attack on Azerbaijani territory contradicts the norms and principles of international law and contributes to rising tensions in the region.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry also demanded explanations from Iran and called for urgent steps to prevent such incidents from happening again.

The statement emphasized that the Azerbaijani side reserves the right to take appropriate response measures.

Earlier, it was reported that Iran had struck Nakhichevan airport with drones. Several other unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly fell in other areas, with one later said to have landed near a school.
