Ruling party seeks ban on names in party titles

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia’s National Assembly will convene an extraordinary session on April 7 to discuss amendments to the Electoral Code, including a proposal to ban the use of personal names in party and alliance titles.

The draft law will be reviewed under a 24-hour procedure, according to the parliament’s official website.

The ruling Civil Contract party has decided to introduce the restriction, Sputnik Armenia reports.

Human rights advocate and member of the Strong Armenia party, Gohar Meloyan, said the initiative is aimed at preventing the use of Samvel Karapetyan’s name.

“The Civil Contract faction has introduced amendments to the Electoral Code that prohibit the use of personal names in party and alliance titles. You fought against Samvel Karapetyan’s images, now you are fighting against his name. It will not work, because there is an absolute truth, and our political force is fighting to restore it,” she said.

Meloyan recalled that the alliance Strong Armenia with Samvel Karapetyan was formed on March 31 and announced its intention to participate in the elections.

“From April 13, the Central Electoral Commission was set to begin accepting documents from political forces. The ruling party is trying, in this short period before submissions begin, to interfere and change the rules of the game,” she added.

She stressed that the issue goes beyond their political force and affects every citizen with electoral rights, as well as the legal and democratic foundations of the state.

Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 7, 2026.
