Baku links Armenia elections to peace deal

PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijan’s presidential special representative Elchin Amirbekov stated that the results of the upcoming elections in Armenia and the adoption of a new Constitution will “play an important role in signing a peace agreement.” He made the remarks during a working visit to the Czech Republic in an interview with CNN Prima News.

During the interview, Amirbekov also addressed questions related to the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, outlining the agreements reached and steps taken toward ensuring lasting peace, APA reports.

According to him, “the results of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia, as well as a referendum on adopting a new Constitution planned in the near future, will play an important role in the process of signing a peace agreement between the two countries and, consequently, in ensuring long-term and sustainable peace in the region.”

On August 8, at the White House, a trilateral meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev resulted in the signing of a joint declaration on the outcomes of the meeting.

Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States, initialed the agreement “On peace and the establishment of interstate relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
