Excessive intake of free sugars has been linked to weight gain and fat accumulation, while also raising the risk of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. What are free sugars ● Sugars added to foods and beverages by manufacturers, cooks, or consumers. ● Naturally occurring sugars found in honey, syrups, fruit juices, and fruit juice concentrates. According to the World Health Organization, sugars provide energy (1 g = 4 kcal), but are not considered essential nutrients. Children under the age of two are advised to avoid foods and drinks containing sugar. For children over two, adolescents, and adults, it is recommended to keep free sugar intake below 10% of total daily energy consumption (about 50 grams or roughly 12 teaspoons for a 2,000 kcal diet). A considerable share of sugar in modern diets remains “hidden” in processed foods that are not typically viewed as sweets. For instance, a tablespoon of ketchup contains about 4 grams (around one teaspoon) of free sugar, while a bottle of sweetened carbonated drink may exceed 40 grams. Reducing sugar consumption involves limiting high-sugar foods and beverages, including sweetened drinks and confectionery. Experts also advise replacing sugary snacks with fresh fruits and raw vegetables.
