Armenia presents COP17 priorities at UN

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia has presented its priorities for the upcoming COP17 biodiversity summit during a United Nations forum session.

Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Paruyr Hovhannisyan, took part in a side event organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity during the 25th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Hovhannisyan outlined the key priorities of Armenia’s presidency within the framework of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), scheduled for 2026.

He stressed that Armenia aims to organize an inclusive and participatory conference, ensuring the full and effective involvement of Parties and stakeholders, including representatives of indigenous peoples and local communities, across all areas.

He emphasized that one of COP17’s important outcomes will be the institutionalization of a subsidiary body related to Article 8(j) of the Convention and other provisions concerning indigenous peoples and local communities, as well as the launch of the Cali Fund, which will directly contribute to the well-being of indigenous peoples and local communities. In addition, the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is planned.

The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) will take place on October 18–30, 2026, at the Meridian Expo Center in Yerevan.
