Anti-Corruption Committee seeks election law changes

PanARMENIAN.Net - The head of Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee has appealed to the Minister of Justice, proposing legislative amendments based on the findings of investigations into corruption-related electoral crimes uncovered in the period preceding the parliamentary elections.

The committee has suggested introducing legal mechanisms that would reduce the likelihood of such schemes being used in the future, including through restrictions on political forces involved in electoral misconduct.

“Recognizing the importance of ensuring the legality of electoral processes, the Committee has conducted a preliminary summary of data from proceedings related to corruption-related electoral crimes uncovered during the period preceding the 2026 National Assembly elections. The mechanisms through which these crimes were committed, as well as the circumstances that facilitated them, have been identified.

Based on these findings, the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee of the Republic of Armenia has appealed to the Minister of Justice, proposing the initiation of legislative changes aimed at eliminating the factors contributing to such offenses.

The proposed amendments would minimize the possibility of applying the criminal schemes that have been uncovered, including by prohibiting political forces involved in such schemes from participating in electoral processes,” the statement said.

On June 14, the final results of the June 7 parliamentary elections were published. Civil Contract received 726,819 votes, or 49.7456%; Strong Armenia won 340,006 votes, or 23.2710%; and the Armenia Alliance secured 144,983 votes, or 9.9231%. The Prosperous Armenia party failed to clear the 4% threshold and will not enter parliament, receiving 58,287 votes, or 3.9893%.

Civil Contract will hold 64 seats in parliament, including three seats allocated to representatives of national minorities. The Strong Armenia party will receive 29 seats, including one seat for an Assyrian representative, while the Armenia Alliance will receive 12 seats.
