Karapetyan says citizenship renunciation is underway

PanARMENIAN.Net - Strong Armenia party leader Samvel Karapetyan responded to questions from reporters outside the Anti-Corruption Court about renouncing his Russian and Cypriot citizenships.

"I no longer like that you are so focused on my passports. I have already made a political statement. I said that on the day it becomes necessary—meaning the day I am declared prime minister—I will be solely a citizen of Armenia. That should be enough," Karapetyan said, according to Factor.am .

He added that the process of renouncing his Russian and Cypriot citizenships has already begun and dismissed the repeated questions on the issue.

"In order to complete the renunciation, the court must first release me so I can personally go to the embassies and submit the necessary applications. If I hand an application to Vardevanyan, I don't know what he could do with it. I have to go to the embassies myself and file the applications.

You attend all the court hearings. You see all of our motions and you see the authorities' fears. There is a legal procedure for this. The first step is to go to the embassy and submit an application," Karapetyan said.

On June 26, the Constitutional Court began hearing the consolidated case based on applications filed by seven political forces challenging the results of the June 7 regular parliamentary elections. The proceedings are ongoing.
