Five charged in Konjoryan beating case

PanARMENIAN.Net - Public criminal prosecution has been initiated against five individuals in connection with the alleged assault on Avet Konjoryan, the brother of Civil Contract MP Hayk Konjoryan. They have been charged with committing physical violence as a group, Armenia's Investigative Committee said, according to RFE/RL.

For two of the five suspects, the court imposed a travel ban and bail as preventive measures.

It was reported earlier that Avet Konjoryan, who is also affiliated with the Civil Contract party, was severely beaten. Journalist Gayane Zargaryan published the information and a video of the assault, stating that Konjoryan was attacked on the grounds of his home in the town of Abovyan around midnight on July 24.

The wife of Nairi Hakobyan, one of those detained in the case, described a different version of events.

"Every single day he would come to my window in an intoxicated state, using the foulest language. My young daughter would come running out of her room in fear, asking, 'Mom, what's happening?'"

According to her, this behavior had been repeated on numerous occasions before the assault and was allegedly carried out by her husband's former friend, Avet Konjoryan.

Avet Konjoryan declined to comment on the incident. His brother, Hayk Konjoryan, who is a candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, also chose not to comment.

This is not the first time Avet Konjoryan has been involved in a high-profile case. In 2010, he was charged with particularly large-scale fraud. In 2025, he was stripped of his driver's license for one year but was again found driving three months later.
