Regular hearing over Vahagn Chakalyan rescheduled for September 18

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Chamber of criminal cases of Tbilisi's Appellate Court yesterday hosted the first hearing of Vahagn Chakhalyan's case. It followed the scenario of the previous hearing held in Akhalkskhe district court, "Yerkir" union's program coordinator Robert Tatoyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net correspondent.



"During court hearing, the judge rejected almost all the motions demanding an extra expert examination of the weapon allegedly found in Chakhalyans' house. But when defense lawyers expressed willingness to cover the expenses for expert examination, the judge could no longer reject the second motion," the activist stressed, adding that the judge had ignored the lawyer's remark and only followed the Prosecutor's instruction. In the meantime, the accused was provided with translation services during hearings. The judge didn't allow Chakhalyan to read out his statement and refused to attach it to case materials. He also pointed out to prejudiced and negligent attitude to Chakhalyan.



"Considering that summer holidays are drawing near, the judge decided to appoint the next hearing on September 18. One thing is certain: Georgian authorities intentionally delay the process. They perfectly realize that defense lawyers are ready to reach European Court to restore justice," Robert Tatoyan stated.



On April 6-7, Akhaltskhe district court held final hearings over political activist Vahagn Chakhlyan, leader of United Javahk Democratic Alliance. The court sentenced the activist to 10 years in prison, without possibility to replace such decision by fines.
