Some 60 people, among them UK Ambassador to Armenia Charles Lonsdale, ran, walked, or wheelchaired approximately one mile from Matenadaran (Institute of Ancient Manuscripts) to Republic Square to support the local Paralympics Committee. On May 26, President of the Armenian National Paralympics Committee Hakob Abrahamyan received a check from Ambassador Charles Lonsdale, confirming that the Sport Relief Mile raised over AMD 1 million, the UK Embassy in Armenia told to PanARMENIAN.Net All of it went directly to the Armenian National Paralympics Committee, assisting them to organize a conference on Paralympics issues, as well as supporting to organize the annual festival of Paralympic sport in Armenia. Ambassador Lonsdale said the Sport Relief Mile may become an annual event and wished good luck to the Armenian Paralympic team in London in 2012. Hakob Abrahamyan said: “This is one of the rare times when the attention is focused on the issues of people with disabilities”. Sport Relief is the initiative by the British charity Comic Relief. The UK Foreign Ministry will organize Sport Relief Mile in various countries in 2010. In Armenia, the Mile was organized by the British Embassy and the British Council, in partnership with the Armenian National Paralympics Committee.
