Activists continue efforts to prevent foreign language schools opening in ArmeniaJune 8, 2010 - 15:19 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - “We are against opening of foreign language schools” initiative group members are indignant over the latest statement by Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, who labeled them as ‘an aggressive minority’. “I announce that we will be very active, intensifying efforts. We will do our utmost to prevent adoption of the bill in the National Assembly. If the bill is approved, we will struggle against opening of these school. If schools are opened, we will spare no effort to close them,” activist Armen Hovhannisyan said, adding that studying in a foreign language school will arouse a large number of problems in the future. Arkady Karapetyan, commander of Artsakh liberation army in 1991-1992, said for his part: “Language is an issue of security, it’s a tool commander uses when giving orders in the army. If half of the soldiers do not understand Armenian while the other half do not understand Russian and if the commander has to translate his orders during the war, the results will be deplorable.” As an alternative to foreign language schools, activists offer to introduce the international bachelor system, which meets international educational standards and at the same time doesn’t limit the students’ opportunity to study any language.
