ENVIRONMENTAL RISK OF BAKU-TBILISI-CEYHAN OIL PIPELINE SPOKEN ABOUT EVEN IN AZERBAIJANJune 5, 2003 - 22:02 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The majority of participants of a round table on environmental issues of Azerbaijan, initiated in Baku by the Green Party, came against the building of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. As reported by "Arminfo" agency, representatives of mainly non-governmental organizations emphasized the ecological threat the oil pipeline posed to the country. Specifically, there was criticism of the policy of "British Petroleum" oil company, which "plays an important role in the project, but does not give enough consideration to environmental issues." Meanwhile, in the words of meeting participants, in other countries "BP" spends over 10% of its gains to solve ecological problems. Criticism was also addressed to the Azeri government, which does not protect the environmental interests of the country. As a result the round table participants arrived at the conclusion that the realization of the given project can be agreed upon after its detailed consideration from the point of view of environmental safety.
