On this occasion, the Google logo portrays some of the famous inventions of the scientist: phonograph, the motion picture camera, and, of course, the electric light bulb. Google doodles have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google team has put out commemorative doodles on events ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history. Doodles have celebrated the U.S. Independence Day, the Olympics, and John Lennon's 70th birthday. Google estimates it created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010. In his lifetime, Edison patented 1,093 inventions, earning him the nickname "The Wizard of Menlo Park." "Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration," he used to say.
