EU President underlines support to OSCE MG![]() June 23, 2011 - 14:36 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - European President Herman Van Rompuy underlined the strong EU support for a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. “It is now high time to make additional efforts to finalize the agreement on the Basic Principles,” he said after a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Brussels. “This would allow to start negotiations on a peace agreement soon. The EU continues to support the work of the OSCE Minsk Group for the peaceful resolution of the conflict on the basis of the principles of non-use of force, territorial integrity and self-determination of people.” ![]() The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now. Azerbaijani authorities report that they have already resettled 3,000 people in the Nagorno-Karabakh town of Stepanakert. On June 10, Azerbaijani President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev will leave for Turkey on a working visit. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev arrived in Moscow on April 22 to hold talks with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Authorities said a total of 192 Azerbaijani troops were killed and 511 were wounded during Azerbaijan’s offensive. Partner news |
