Russian MFA: no new mediators needed for Karabakh settlement

PanARMENIAN.Net - The established format of OSCE Minsk Group and activity of the Co-chairs on behalf of Russia, United States and France is acknowledged by the parties to Nagorno Karabakh conflict as efficient and competent tool for the problem resolution, representative of Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said, when commenting on Kremlin’s opinion regarding offers of Iranian parliament chairman Ali Larijani about change of OSCE MG format and necessity to engage Iran in the process.

“The recent trilateral meeting organized by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev between Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan gave hope to push forward this complicated process and to step over to more serious stage of talks and development of peace settlement,” the Azeri-Press Agency quoted Lukashevich as saying in Baku.

Speaking about the format having been formed within years, Lukashevich noted that “the history of OSCE MG creation goes back to the early 1990ies.” “Despite diverse periods of the conflict development, it showed that its potential is not exhausted; Co-chairs try to be responsive, energetic assisting to Yerevan and Baku to come to agreements,” he said.

On July 8, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs handed over a personal message and offers to President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement. Lavrov will hand over the similar message to Azerbaijani leader in Baku as well.

The summit between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia in Kazan on June 24 completed without an agreement on basic principles of Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement.
