RPA member: too early for Armenia to join Eurasian Union

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia always stands for integration processes if they contribute to larger flows of economic resources to the country and opening of new markets, member of ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) said.

“We have never opposed to integration processes. Nor have we opposed Western, Eastern, European and Eurasian organizations,” Artak Zakaryan told a political debate.

Zakaryan noted that Eurasian Union will be founded on the basis of the Customs Union, non-alignment to which Armenia has officially declared.

He also noted it too early to talk about Armenia’s joining the Eurasian Union.

On November 18, Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan have signed a decree to set up a joint body to oversee and regulate the economy and trade in the three former Soviet countries. The Eurasian Economic Commission will be set up in January to regulate and to gradually take over functions in shaping and executing trade and economic policies from Russian, Belarusian and Kazakh authorities in a way similar to the economic bodies of the European Union.

The debate was organized by Armenian Center of Political and International Studies jointly with National Democratic Institute (NDI).
