Genocide bill initiator shocked over Turkey's feedback

PanARMENIAN.Net - The initiator of the bill penalizing Armenian Genocide denial is shocked by Turkey's feedback.

"Today, Turkey practices diplomacy of threats. We are vitually shocked by the level of feedback from the Turks," AFP quoted Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) MP Valérie Boyer as saying.

"This type of interference can only strengthen the resolve of the French National Assembly. The proposal is the culmination of a long legislative process that began with the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in 2001," she stressed.

The French parliament is to debate the bill, which would see anyone in France who publicly denies the Genocide facing a year in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros, on Dec 22.

Turkey has piled pressure on France to drop the law ahead of the vote, with President Abdullah Gul and a Turkish delegation to Paris warning its adoption will spark a diplomatic crisis and have economic consequences.
