Assembly of Armenians of Europe: Genocide bill adoption victory of justice

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Assembly of the Armenians of Europe (AAE) salutes the approval by the French lower parliament of the bill that makes of the denial of genocides a criminal act to be punished by the law.

“We express our thanks to all those persons who worked tirelessly for the approval of this draft law.

We consider this decisive step of the French lower parliament as a victory of justice that brings honor to France, a traditional champion of human rights.

We also consider the acceptance of the draft law as a serious step towards the restitution of the essential rights of the Armenian nation,” AAE statement said.

On December 22, French National Assembly passed the bill criminalizing the Armenian Genocide denial. The vote followed the December 7 decision by the Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly to adopt the bill introduced by MP Valerie Boyer (UMP).

The draft law envisages a year in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros for those who publicly deny the Armenian Genocide in France.
