Baku calls for ‘soonest resolution’ of Karabakh conflict![]() January 23, 2012 - 12:10 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijan calls on international community for more decisive and consistent position in resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and “creation of conditions for restoring peaceful atmosphere, stability and cooperation in the region.” News.az reports that according to the annual report issued by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “in 2011 official Baku continued negotiations on peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict on the basis of norms and principles of international law and restoration of its territorial integrity and sovereignty.” Let’s add, that this statement seems to be strange against the background of non-constructive position of Azerbaijan, which tries to hamper the settlement process, constantly violating the ceasefire and threatening to begin war in Karabakh at any time. Today, Jan 23, on the initiative of Russia’s President, a trilateral meeting between Armenian, Russian and Azerbaijani leaders will take place in Sochi. ![]() ![]() The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now. ![]() ![]() The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, have arrived in Washington.
