Celebrated on March 8, the day calls for increased attention toward the rights of women as well as a global acknowledgment for their achievements in society, politics and economics. International Women’s Day started out as International Working Women’s Day, a Socialist political event in parts of Eastern Europe and Russia, back in 1909. At the time, it was proposed as a way to push for equal rights for woman, including the right to vote, Slash Gear reminds. This year, the United Nation’s theme for the day is “Empower Women – End Hunger and Poverty” with the organization hoping to focus attention on how women have been let down in developing economies. “Healthcare, education, gender inequality and limited access to credit, however, have posed a number of challenges for rural women” the UN said in a statement. “It is estimated that 60-percent of chronically hungry people are women and girls.” Top stories Yerevan will host the 2024 edition of the World Congress On Information Technology (WCIT).
