If the top strap (the area of the frame above the cylinder) is checkered and the right side of the barrel is stamped "S&W 357 Magnum", it is a S&W Hand Ejector (pre-Model 27). It could be a "Highway Patrolman" if the right side of the barrel is so stamped the top strap ... Definitely a great concealed carry pistol that offers a double stack magazine capacity; 10 rnd and 12 rnd. People don’t like the trigger but I think I like it. The 5946 was built during the heyday of Stainless Steel, big frame semi auto's. They are very rugged and well built. And are all but impossible to wear out. Today the trend is lighter, cheaper, and smaller because of the popularity of concealed carry. Few citizens want to carry a 40 ounce, all steel pistol.
