The adoption of a Resolution on the Armenian Genocide by the Senate of Uruguay is unacceptable for Turkey, stated Turkish Ambassador to Argentina Shukru Tufan, reporting the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry is already informed. It should be reminded that lately the Uruguayan Senate passed a resolution, according to which April 24 is declared Commemoration Day of victims of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey. As noted by Zaman Turkish newspaper, the Senate decision is due to the coming presidential election in Uruguay and activation of efforts of the influential Armenian Diaspora respectively. Meanwhile, according to the source, Turkey per se does not have political or economic ties with Uruguay and the relations between the two countries are merely of symbolic nature. There is even no Turkish Embassy in the capital of Montevideo. This, in the newspaper's opinion, notably complicates Ankara's counteractions against the decision in question. The Turkish Ambassador to Argentina is now engaged in attempts to prevent the decision from coming into effect.
