The first ever WikiConference launched in Yerevan on September 8, with Wikimedia International Foundation, Armenia’s Wiki community and ArmenTel company (Beeline trademark) as the event organizers.

The event aims to promote the idea of Wikipedia and free content in the region and provide an opportunity for Wikipedians around the world to meet and share their experiences of Wikipedia.

Development of Armenian-language Wikipedia content, local functioning of Wiki-tools and technologies are on event agenda.

During the event, Wikimedia Foundation chair Ting Chen stressed the progress of Armenian-language Wikipedia, with twofold growth in the number of articles posted in 2011.

As Wikimedia projects coordinator in Armenia Susanna Mkrtchyan noted,”the WikiConfernce is a great opportunity for local experts to familiarize themselves with Foundation projects, as well as adopt the Foundation’s experiences. The conference aims to promote dissemination of free information and development of knowledge-based society.”

The conference hosts Wikimedia representatives from Hungary, Georgia, Russia, with scientists, university professors, members of internet communities participating.
