Ankara to form Turkish lira-zone as Eurozone alternative

Turkey plans to create a Turkish lira-zone as an alternative to the Eurozone, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

As Erdogan noted during his official visit to Germany, a number of EU countries resolved against joining the Eurozone and have not suffered as a result.

"Great Britain has not joined the Eurozone and the country's economy is quite stable," he said. "British authorities advised us not to join the Eurozone, but create a Turkish lira- Zone, instead."

Erdogan further stressed the need for the EU to reconsider its monetary policy.

Eurozone is the currency union uniting 27 European Union countries. The official currency is the euro. Eurozone was established in 1999, Trend reported.
