During the session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Armenia was elected member of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The republic was also re-elected member of the Committee for Programme and Coordination for 2006-2008, RA Foreign Ministry's press service reported. The UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is a 40-member body coordinating the UN activities in crime prevention. The Commission is charged with the task to battle organized crime, corruption, terror and trafficking of persons. Armenia's joining the Commission will offer the republic an extra possibility to bring the measures undertaken by the RA Government in accord with the UN activities as well as efficiently cooperate with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The UN Committee for Programme and Coordination is a main subsidiary organ of the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly for planning, programming and coordination.
