Skype has introduced free video messaging, allowing users to send recorded clips to one another, Digital Spy said.
The service is available for Windows, Mac, iOS, BlackBerry and Android devices, with a version for Microsoft's Windows Phone yet to be announced.
"Skype Video Messaging adds another great way to keep in touch with friends and family during life's most meaningful moments. Send a video message to your friends and family today - it's easy," said Skype in a statement.
"You can capture a fleeting memory, create a heartfelt reminder or simply tell a friend or family member 'wish you were here' even when they aren't online."
Skype announced back in April that it now plays host to 2 billion minutes of communication each day, across PCs, mobile devices, games consoles and connected television sets.
Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion (£5.4bn) in October 2011.
