Guillermo del Toro teases sunnier “Pacific Rim 2”

In the video interview with Digital Spy, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro hints at what's to come for the eagerly-anticipated - and recently delayed - sci-fi sequel, the entertainment news agency reports.

As well as promising a break from the never-ending rain seen in the first giant robots v giant monsters movie, del Toro teases a new addition to the Pac Rim universe on a par with mecha and kaiju.

"We're going a very different route [for Pacific Rim 2]," says del Toro.

"Pacific Rim had what I used to call 'Gothic tech' - the storm, the rain, it was very tempestuous [and] atmospheric - and [Pacific Rim 2] has a lot more daylight, for example."

"I cannot say what, but we have elements that are different," he added. "You still get kaiju, you still get mecha, and then you'll get... a few new things."

What those "few new things" could be to match the likes of kaiju and mecha remains to be seen, but it's got our heads spinning: Aliens? Tom Hiddleston the size of a skyscraper?

Perhaps the inclusion of Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams in Pacific Rim 2 - something he's recently tweeted about - is the colossal new addition that will rival the mecha.

Crimson Peak is out Friday, October 16, while Pacific Rim 2 has no official release date as yet, though August 4, 2017 is still officially pencilled in on studio Legendary's calendar.
