Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning for NBC's "Cruel Intentions" series. The "Buffy" alum, who starred in the 1999 movie, is set to reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil in the drama pilot which will serve as a follow-up to the dark drama film, AceShowbiz reports.

It's Gellar herself who broke the news of her return after several weeks of negotiations. She wrote on Instagram on Wednesday, February 24, "That's right 'everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way' #kathrynmerteuil is back!!! I am happy to say that I will be joining them (and @nbctv ) on the new #Crueltv," along with a new and old picture of her with the movie writer/director Roger Kumble and executive producer Neal Moritz, who are also back on board for the TV show.

NBC's "Cruel Intentions" picks up more than 15 years after the movie left off. It will center on Bash Casey, the son of the movie's central characters Annette (Reese Witherspoon) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), who discovers his late father's legacy in a hidden journal. Bash is subsequently introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined.

In pilot, Kathryn is a master manipulator who easily hides her self-serving machinations behind a facade of charm, poise and warmth. The woman behind the scandal involving Bash's mother, Annette Hargrove, Kathryn is now married to the wealthy Pascal Barrett and spearheads an inspiring youth rehabilitation movement, as well as being involved in a local private school. The stepsister of Sebastian Valmont, Kathryn is privately shaken by the arrival of Sebastian's son, Bash, and the re-appearance in her life of the girl she wronged years ago, Annette Hargrove Casey. A force of nature, Kathryn has many secrets in her life.

Samantha Logan and Sophina Brown have also been cast for the pilot, which script is written by Kumble, Jordan Ross and Lindsey Rosin. Kumble is also attached to direct the pilot.
