Germany says Aleppo aid convoy attack “an act of terrorism”

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the strike on a humanitarian convoy near Aleppo in Syria as an act of terrorism, at a press meeting in New York on Tuesday, September 20, Sputnik reports.

On Monday, an attack on Syrian Red Crescent trucks carrying tons of food and medicine for 80,000 people in Aleppo destroyed most of the cargo and killed civilians.

"This attack on the humanitarian convoy is a horrible act, a terrorist act that we condemn in the strongest terms," the minister said ahead of a meeting on Syria.

Steinmeier said the International Syrian Support Group was to meet in New York to discuss possible ways of salvaging the U.S.-Russia brokered truce for Syria.

"I hope, of course, that we will manage to reverse the escalation of the past few days," the minister said in New York.

The ceasefire was agreed by Moscow and Washington on September 9. The countries were to coordinate airstrikes on Islamist militants in Syria, but the warring sides have since accused each other of numerous violations.
