Twitter reportedly broadens live video push

Twitter plans to announce next week that it will allow media firms to post live streaming videos directly into the service, the latest step in its path to becoming a hub for live video, The Information said citing two people briefed on the plans.

The company will open up its live-streaming API, allowing media firms to plug directly into Twitter’s software, the people said.

Right now, media firms that want to stream live on Twitter have to arrange deals with the company or else use its Periscope app. Twitter will also announce partnerships with firms that provide back-end services for live-video streaming.

Twitter has been hosting a steady stream of live sporting (and e-sporting) events recently. The company landed a deal to stream 15 e-sports events this year and also secured the rights to National Lacrosse League games for 2017 and 2018.
