Catholicos, Education Minister discuss church-state relations in Armenia

Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II on Monday, September 14 hosted the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Arayik Harutyunyan, to discuss church-state relations.

The meeting comes amid disagreements between the two over the exclusion of History of the Armenian Church courses from the list of compulsory curriculum subjects in school.

The Catholicos and the Minister discussed reforms in the field of education proposed by the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The sides agreed that a meeting between representatives of both sides will be held in the near future to weigh in on the issues.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports and the Armenian Apostolic Church have had somewhat tense relations as Minister Harutyunyan does not think History of the Armenian Church should be a separate compulsory subject at school, but instead be included in the course of the History of the Armenian People.
