Blinken, Lavrov discuss Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict

U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have discussed the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan at a meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland, on May 19.

According to a press release from the American side, the two discussed ways to find a long-term political solution to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

On the morning of May 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan violated the border of Armenia in the southern province of Syunik, advancing 3.5 kilometers and surrounding Sev Lake, which is situated on the border between the two countries but is predominantly a part of Armenia. On May 13, the Azerbaijani military committed more border violations against Armenia, advancing near Vardenis (Gegharkunik province) and Sisian (Syunik province).

Blinken and Lavrov both stressed their two countries have differences but should work together on some issues, such as the coronavirus pandemic, climate change, Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs, and the conflict in Afghanistan.
