Russia, UN discuss return of refugees to Karabakh

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi discussed the return of refugees to Nagorno-Karabakh on Monday, June 28.

"During the conversation, a thorough exchange of views took place on the situation of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and stateless persons in the world, also taking into account the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as various aspects of interaction of the UNHCR with [Russia], the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Also on the table was the return of refugees and temporarily displaced persons to Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent regions in accordance with the statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia from November 9, 2020 on a ceasefire and end of hostilities in the conflict zone. "

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side has returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
