Russian President Vladimir Putin has stressed the importance of compromise in resolving the situation in South Caucasus, at a meeting with Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday, July 20, the Kremlin's website reports.

"They [compromises - Ed.) are always the most difficult part, but if we want – and we all want – a settlement, then we must follow this path," Putin said.

The Russian leader even thanked Aliyev for his efforts.

Aliyev noted that Moscow and Baku are in constant contact on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, and are determined to make the post-conflict period as painless as possible.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side has returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
