Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani has said there is "active communication" between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia on the initiative and with the mediation of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

Zalkaliani made the remarks in an interview with the country's Public Television, the Armenian Service of RFE/RL reveals.

"The Georgian government has achieved these first steps, primarily thanks to regional cooperation. This important result was achieved through our mediation," the foreign policy chief said.

"Georgia has already been endowed with a strong function of a regional player."

The Minister noted that further steps in this direction will be taken with the active support of European countries and the United States.

Azerbaijan in June released to Armenia 15 prisoners of war captured last year during hostilities over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Under the deal mediated by Garibashvili, Yerevan reciprocated by providing Baku with maps of minefields in the conflict zone.
