The Colorado state capitol khachkar memorial to the Armenian Genocide, which was vandalized with spray-painted graffiti in May 2020, has been restored, 9News reports.
Community representatives said back then that despite warnings some individuals attempted to clean the khachkar on their own, and possibly damaged it further.
Now, an artist has finished the meticulous restoration process. And with the original artist in Armenia, the community learned that the only way to clean the memorial from paint was to curve out a layer and to basically re-create the monument.
On April 24, 1915, a large group of Armenian intellectuals was rounded up and assassinated in Constantinople by the Ottoman government. On April 24, 2022, Armenians worldwide will be commemorating the 107th anniversary of the Genocide which continued until 1923. Some three dozen countries, hundreds of local government bodies and international organizations have so far recognized the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as Genocide. Turkey denies to this day.
