Armenia to return Azerbaijani soldier as “gesture of goodwill

Armenia, as a “gesture of goodwill,” has decided to hand over to Baku Azerbaijan serviceman Ruslan Penakhov, previously detained near the village of Tegh in Armenia’s southern Syunik province.

After crossing the border, Penakhov was neutralized by the servicemen of the Armenian Armed Forces on February 28 and later arrested, the Investigative Committee reported.

However, the National Security Service of Armenia said on March 5 that the serviceman found himself near the positions of the Armenian Armed Forces after fleeing an incident among servicemen in an Azerbaijani position and losing his bearings.

The NSS added that Penakhov will be returned to Azerbaijan as a “gesture of goodwill.”

At the same time, according to official data, more than 20 Armenian captives, including former leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh, are still being held in Azerbaijan.
