AZERBAIJAN BECOMES TRANSIT COUNTRY FOR SLAVE-TRADE
According to the results of the monitoring for studies of the human trafficking problem conducted by the International organization for migration (IOM), Azerbaijan is becoming a transit country for slave trade. According to the IOM head in Azerbaijan Joost van der Aalst , the full report on this problem will be issued in August. The monitoring in Baku has brought out that the slave-trade victims are most often women at the age of 19-40. The difficulties of economic nature are the only reason for this. The IOM head stated information on number of such women arrested in Turkey and the UAE. According to the data of the police of these countries, during the period 1996-1999, 650 prostitutes were deported from Turkey to Azerbaijan and the UAE police arrested 900 prostitutes from Azerbaijan during the period 2000-2001 March.
