Armenia: Rescue workers restore pedestrian bridge for flood-hit community

Rescue workers on Wednesday, June 5 restored a pedestrian bridge in the town of Alaverdi in Armenia’s north, which had completely collapsed as a result of river flooding, leaving the residents of one of its districts cut off from the rest of the world since May 26-27, the press service of the Rescue Service of the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.

On May 26-27, heavy rains caused floods in Armenia, with the Debed and Aghstev rivers bursting their banks and killing four people.

According to Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Gnel Sanosyan, as many as 14 bridges have collapsed. Several transportation links have been closed, including trains between Yerevan and Tbilisi as well as the main border crossing between Armenia and Georgia.
