The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has updated sporting nationality – the nationality that sportspersons with multiple nationality opt to use in international contests – of Elina Avanesyan, who now represents Armenia.
Armenia the new ranking from August 5, she is listed as a representative of Armenia, not Russia. Earlier, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia Karen Giloyan reported that Avanesyan is planning to transition to an Armenian “citizenship”.
As of August 5, an Armenian flag is displayed on her profile.
Avanesyan is 21 years old and was born in Pyatigorsk. The tennis player is ranked 58th in the world. In July, she reached the first WTA final in her career, which took place in the Romanian city of Iasi. In the final, she lost to Russia's Mirra Andreeva.
