Russia and Iran approve gas pipeline route through Azerbaijan

The gas pipeline from Russia to Iran will run through Azerbaijan, with its route already approved. Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev confirmed this information to journalists, TASS reports.

“Through Azerbaijan, the route is agreed upon. We are now in the final stage of negotiations — price approval. Volumes are already fixed. Pricing is always a commercial issue, a search for compromise, so working groups from both sides have been formed, and specialists are developing a pricing approach,” the minister stated.

In June 2024, Gazprom and the National Iranian Gas Company signed a strategic memorandum outlining the organization of Russian gas supplies to Iran. Although Iran extracts around 260 billion cubic meters of gas annually from its fields, the country, with a population of approximately 89 million, still faces shortages due to high domestic demand. The limited development of alternative energy sources further intensifies this reliance on gas.

Iranian authorities plan to establish a gas hub within their territory in collaboration with Russia, Qatar, and Turkmenistan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on January 17 that the pipeline project between the two countries is underway. He noted that initial deliveries could reach up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas, with the potential to increase to 55 billion cubic meters annually. The president emphasized Russia’s commitment to the project’s realization.
