India is negotiating the sale of Akash-1S missile systems with a second buyer after Armenia. Details about this country remain undisclosed, Defense News India reports.
Indian-made Akash-1S surface-to-air missile systems, with nearly 96% indigenous content, have attracted interest from a second nation besides Armenia.
India is currently in talks with this undisclosed buyer for the advanced Akash-1S system. Earlier, a $720 million export deal with Armenia marked a significant milestone, strengthening global confidence in India’s defense technology.
The Akash-1S is a medium-range, surface-to-air missile system capable of engaging targets within a 25 km radius and detecting enemy aircraft at long distances. This upgraded version of the Akash system features enhanced target acquisition and destruction technology. It operates in challenging conditions, including high altitudes and low temperatures.
The new variant of Akash-1S can neutralize aircraft, drones, helicopters, and even ballistic missiles. However, its only drawback is the absence of a longer-range missile, which is currently under development.
Earlier, The Economic Times reported that Armenia signed a major defense export deal with India, including missiles, rockets, and ammunition. India is also set to export Pinaka multi-barrel rocket systems and anti-tank missiles to Armenia, which recently announced plans to appoint a military attaché in India.
