Arman Babajanyan, For the Republic party leader, announced on his Facebook page that on January 24, a parliamentary committee will discuss a draft law on launching the process of Armenia’s EU membership.
The justification for the draft, published on the parliament's website, states: “The purpose of adopting the law 'On the launch of the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union' is to affirm the will and determination of the people of the Republic of Armenia and its current authorities to join the family of progressive, civilized, and developed nations.
The law proclaims the initiation of Armenia’s EU membership process, which will shape the decisions and policies of Armenia’s authorities. In the current geopolitical environment, the adoption and implementation of the law will enhance Armenia’s sovereignty and resilience.
Adopting the law will make democracy, citizens’ right to participate in state governance, and the rule of law irreversible, restoring trust and confidence in the predictability of the state’s policies.
The adoption of the law on launching the process of EU accession will contribute to peace and stability in the region by restoring the balance of power, enhancing Armenia’s national security capabilities, and aligning the national army with modern standards of EU member states. It will further the continuous development and protection of human rights and create mechanisms for economic security through the elimination of monopolies, economic diversification, productivity growth, and the improvement of goods and services quality. These objectives can only be achieved through cooperation with the West and the EU, access to investments and technologies, industrial revitalization, economic restructuring, the creation of new logistical links, and making Armenian products competitive in European markets,” Babajanyan wrote.
*On January 9, Armenia’s government approved a proposal to launch the EU accession process, submitted by the EuroVote civic initiative. The proposal will soon be discussed in Armenia’s parliament.
The European Union will analyze the draft law approved by Armenia’s government to launch the membership process and will discuss the matter with Armenia’s authorities, according to Anita Hipper, the EU’s chief spokesperson for external relations and security.*
